String of Hearts Quilt SAL - Week 1

Hello and welcome to the String of Hearts SAL!

If you haven’t signed up yet, you can do so here!

Intro

My name is Olivia and I have been quilting since 2018! I am a self-taught quilter (thanks YouTube!) and the only quilter in my family. I’m kinda a serial crafter and hop around from craft to craft to scratch that itch in my brain. Quilting has been the craft that has stuck around and held out the longest! I was actually scared of sewing for the longest time, because I didn’t know how to do fabric math and was worried I was just going to waste a lot of fabric. I’m glad that passed, because quilting has been such a rewarding craft!

Okay, okay - on to the pattern!

Pattern

The String of Hearts pattern came from my love of indoor plants. I have quite a few in my house and I love being surrounded by all of the greenery. The idea came while I was thinking about how I needed more plants, which I’m sure some would say that I need to stop. LOL I went from needing a new plant to NEEDING THIS QUILT PATTERN!

The pattern is based on the String of Hearts plant (Ceropegia woodii) — a trailing succulent plant that has evergreen heart-shaped leaves. The new leaves grow at the ends of the vines, starting out small and growing larger as the leaves mature. The underside of the leaves are pinkish purple — my favorite part!

I know there are many heart quilts out in the world, but to me - this is a plant quilt!

Participation and Prizes

Along with sending out SAL newsletters, I will be posting my progress on Instagram. If you aren’t following me on IG, you totally should. :) If you want to participate in the weekly prize drawings, you can post your progress picture each week on your Instagram using the hashtag #StringofHeartsQuiltSAL to be entered! But make sure you have a public profile - otherwise I won’t be able to see it.

This week’s prizes are:

  1. Olfa 28mm Quick Blade Change Rotary Cutter - because I think these little rotary cutters are a nice addition to your quilting tools!

  2. Omnigrid 8” Rotating Cutter Mat - because trimming is sooo much easier when you use one of these!

  3. Creative Grids 6 1/2” Square Ruler - because I’ve gotten so much use out of mine!

  4. It’s Sew Emma Rotary Cutter Case - because it’s cute and practical for traveling!

Fabrics I’m Using

I had a hard time deciding what fabrics I wanted to use! I made so many mock-ups and LOVED them all! In the end, I decided that since I haven’t made a fat quarter version of String of Hearts, this was the perfect opportunity! I have a hard time not seeing this quilt in greens and I always use pinks in my quilts, so I combined them and decided to go with a scrappy pink and green fabric pull!

The fabrics I’m using are Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Solids in the colors:

  • Crystal Pink

  • Sweet Fig

  • Miami Sunset

  • Blossomed

  • Dried Roses

  • Fresh Sage

  • Fresh Aloe

  • Dark Citron

  • Garden Fern

  • Rosemary

  • Sweet Macadamia

If you choose to make the fat quarter version, each fat quarter is going to get you one of each heart size! You can choose to make the hearts scrappy or keep all 4 heart sizes in the same column to create a cool gradient effect!

This is the mock-up of the version I’m making during the SAL!

I really love the idea of a 2 tone gradient like this one!
