String of Hearts Quilt - the details and quilts

Hello there again!

I have released my second quilt pattern, and I am so excited to share it with you all! String of Hearts is a beginner-friendly pattern that comes in 3 sizes — Baby, Throw, and Bed. This pattern is traditionally pieced and Fat Quarter-friendly!

Along side my love of quilting, I also have a love of indoor plants! I have an ever-growing collection of plants that is maybe taking over certain parts of my home…. But that’s okay! Plants make the air in my space cleaner, so really it’s all a good thing in the end. Right? Haha! So there was a day when I was driving to work and thought, “Hmm, I don’t have any String plants yet. I should get one. Maybe the String of Hearts first…” And it was like the lightbulb came on in my head so bright that I thought it would shatter the bulb. I NEEDED A STRING OF HEARTS QUILT PATTERN!

So, this pattern is inspired by the String of Hearts plant (Ceropegia woodii) — a trailing succulent plant that has evergreen heart-shaped leaves. The new leaves grow at the ends of the vines, starting out small and growing larger as the leaves mature. The underside of the leaves are pinkish purple — my favorite part!

I played with this pattern a lot because I wanted it to be perfect and easy to make! I originally started out with pairs of hearts in a chain instead of the single heart, but that was a little too busy and funky for my likings. I landed on this single heart chain with the descending sizes to really represent the vines of the plant. I was a little worried that the world didn’t need another heart quilt pattern, especially around Valentine’s Day. But I decided to move forward with it anyway! I liked it and the “plant person” in me really wanted to make it! And I know I’m not the only “plant person” out there who would enjoy it either!

There wasn’t really a decision behind making the cover quilt green — it was basically the way I always saw it in my head. It’s a quilt pattern about a plant; it has to be green! And the hearts had to be dark green to light green because that’s the way the leaves of the String of Hearts plant look on the vines! I am so pleased with how this quilt turned out!

I worked with Joanna Marsh of Kustom Kwilts again for my longarming needs! Joanna is amazing and lovely and the best longarmer — you should really check her business out! I went with the Rosemary pantograph created by DastardlyLine because plants and because it is so beautiful and dainty!

I chose this succulent fabric by Elizabeth’s Studio as the backing fabric and bound the quilt using a pinkish purple solid fabric to match the underside of the plant’s leaves!

I quickly whipped up a pink version too! So quick, in fact, that I didn’t even take progress pictures! But that’s okay. We all know that the after shots are what you want to see anyway.. Haha!

Joanna and I went with the Smitten pantograph for this one! This pantograph + this pattern + these colors = VALENTINE’S DAY QUILT! ❤️

I chose the Wildest Dreams fabric from the Bookish line for the backing and a solid dark maroon fabric for the binding. I am so glad that I did! It definitely gives off “romance novel” vibes now! I could see Colleen Hoover curling up with this quilt while writing her next book!

I have a quilt kit for both of these versions available in my shop now! Check them out here!
